Global Accessibility Awareness Day

Global Accessibility Awareness Day (or GAAD) is an annual event that aims to ‘get people talking, thinking and learning about digital (web, software, mobile, etc.) accessibility and users with different disabilities.’ It tries to connect with design, development and UX communities who are interested in learning more about digital accessibility, but who may not know where to start.

With that in mind I’ve decided to run a webinar entitled ‘So How Do I Know if My Website is Accessible?’. It’s going to be a reworking of a presentation I’ve given to a number of WordPress WordCamps and Meetup groups in the last few months.

What I’m going to cover

The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (known as WCAG2.0) are a great resource for those building accessible websites. But there’s a lot of if, and the guidelines can be a bit daunting if you don’t know much about accessibility, or if you’re not really technical.

In my webinar I’m going to present a series of yes/no questions that anyone can answer about their own website to get a feel for the level of accessibility. I’ll be covering subjects including: keyboard accessibility, adding images, adding videos, link text, colour contrast and accessible forms. In order to help answer some of the questions I’ll be introducing a couple of free and easy to use tools.

Whilst the questions don’t cover every aspect of web accessibility, if you can answer all these questions correctly, your website is going to be more accessible than many other websites.

Who would benefit from this webinar?

I believe this webinar would benefit anyone who wants to learn more about accessibility, and those who want to know if their website can be difficult or impossible to use by some people.

Designing and building for digital accessibility means understanding the issues that those with disabilities and impairments face when browsing the web.

When is the webinar?

My allotted time is 10:00 am (BST) on Thursday May 15th 2014.

I shall be talking for about 35 – 40 minutes after which I hope to be able to answer any questions about accessibility that people wish to pose. During the presentation I will be showing examples of how websites can answer the questions correctly as well as some websites where things don’t go so well.

How do I find out more? How do I sign up?

The Inclusive Design 24 website has a list of all the sessions taking place, and contains a link to a registration form where you can sign up.

If there is any more information that people will need to know I intend to publish it here.

I’m looking forward to this, and I hope you’ll join me on Thursday. And please think of some great questions.
